Phyiscal Training = Mental Training

I went to bed yesterday around 1:30 am with the intention of maybe trying to get a run in in the morning. The chances didn't seem very probable since I went to bed so late. This morning in bed I glance at my watch and it's 6:50 am. Excellent! I have enough time to get a run in! Unfortunately, sleep seemed like a better until until 7:20 am. I really had to push myself off the bed this time. Even after I got up putting on clothes seemed like a chore. I finally got out of the apartment around 8 am and get to town lake around 8:30 am. I didn't feel like running even then but I just started trotting a slow pace anyway. Eventually I started to pick up the pace and running didn't seem so bad. After about 10 minutes, I stopped to stretch a bit. I never really understood the important of warming up the muscles before stretching. I was in the habit of stretching before my runs but today I could feel my stride and pace was improved when I stretch after a light warm up. After running and walking 3 miles, I finished off with a cool down. It's a great time to reflect on my run and where there is room for improvement. I came to this realization that taking on this physical challenge is a mental feat as well. It takes mental training and discipline to wake up in the morning for a run. The run itself is a tug of war for the mind. Then just as sore aching muscles are rebuilt post-workout so is my confidence level in general. I'm beginning to realize that this half marathon isn't just about completing 13.1 miles, or contributing to child literacy in India. It's also about strengthening my mental capacity and confidence for any feat in the future I wish to achieve.

So if any of you are just procrastinating in life, running a half marathon could be an option to break your habit and get your life back in order. Don't knock it until you try it. ;-)
